South Sudan
Calvary’s Mission to the Toposa of South Sudan began in 2008. We have seen God do some amazing things there, with former witch doctors, cattle thieves, and murderers being transformed, by the power of the Gospel, into spiritual leaders.
The Toposa people number more than 750,000, and less than 2% of them have received or responded to the Gospel. They believe in a supreme god, but worship and offer sacrifices to the spirits of their departed ancestors. Many of them have known nothing but civil war until recent years. South Sudan became the world's youngest nation in July 2011 as it officially separated from Sudan.
We made an initial scout trip to Mogos in October, 2013 to find a place to camp, look for clean water, and begin to build relationships in the area. We found the people to be very friendly and welcoming, and genuinely happy we were there.
We shared the Gospel, and 7 men accepted Christ and were baptized. One of these men, named Alarrio, is one of the area sub-chiefs and is a man of great influence. One man told us that the Toposa kill their enemies in order to steal their cattle. He said that they had never heard the things we were telling them, and they didn’t know that these things were wrong. He went on to say that now that they know, they will stop doing these things. He said that they were like lost sheep, and that if we will come back to teach them more of the word of God, it will not be in vain. His almost exact quotation of scripture he had never heard reminded us of Jesus telling Peter, “…flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.” We find that God has already prepared many of the Toposa for the Truth. When they hear it, they recognize it and respond.
Will you help us bring the Truth to the Toposa of Mogos?
